Votive Candle; About

A votive candle is typically white candle originally intended to be burnt as a offering in a religious ceremony. More modern terms - Votive candles refer to a standard size of candle 2 inches high by 1.5 inches diameter, of any color or scent.

In the Catholic Church candles are placed before a statue of Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary, ususally this will be before a side altar. Votive candles need to be placed in round containers, usually blue or red glass.

Candles are lit for prayer intentions. To 'light a candle for someone' means that you will say a prayer for them, and the candle symbolises your prayers. It is generally considered generous to make a donation for candles to help with the cost. Beside the candle box there will generally be a donation box.

Summary

Although votive candles originated in the church, the modern term now refers to small plug type candles that are 1 1/2 inches in diameter by 2 to 3 inches high. As a votive melts and it becomes liquid in their containers, the wick uses up all the liquid fuel. If you burn a votive on a plate, the burn time will be much shorter because the wax will drip and the wick will be unable to use it.
